How To Measure

Every fit guide on this site lists garment measurements taken flat, not body measurements. To use them, measure a pair of jeans you already own and like the fit of, then compare those numbers against the guide for the pair you're considering.

The videos below show how we take each measurement in the Brooklyn studio. Follow the same method and your numbers will line up with ours.

You will need: a flexible tape measure, a flat surface, and a pair of jeans that fits you the way you want the new pair to fit.

Measurement By Measurement

Jump to the one you need. Lay the jeans flat, smooth out the fabric, and measure in inches.

  • Waist

Button the jeans, lay them flat, and measure straight across the top of the waistband from edge to edge. Double the number.

  • Front & Back Rise

Front: measure from the top of the waistband down to the centre of the crotch seam, following the curve of the fly. Back: measure from the top of the back waistband down to the same seam.

  • Hip / Seat

Measure across the widest point below the fly, usually about an inch under the crotch seam. Double the number.

  • Thigh

Measure straight across the leg at the crotch seam, perpendicular to the inseam. Double the number.

  • Knee

Measure across the leg at the midpoint between the crotch seam and the hem. Double the number.

  • Leg Opening

Measure straight across the hem at the bottom of the leg. Double the number.

  • Inseam

Measure from the crotch seam down the inside leg to the bottom of the hem.

Measuring tips

Measure flat, not around your body

Our guides list the garment laid flat. A 34 inch waist measured flat is 17 inches across, doubled.

Raw denim will shrink

Both sanforized and unsanforized (loomstate) raw denim will shrink, although unsanforized denim will shrink significantly more. If you plan to wash your raw denim jeans soon after purchase, expect some shrinkage and changes to the garment’s measurements.
